Lignosulfonates
Wood-pulp-derived dispersant for drilling fluids and industrial applications. Three grades — sodium, calcium, ferrochrome — for fresh-water, calcium, and HTHP mud systems.
Overview
Lignosulfonates are byproducts of the sulfite wood-pulping process, captured and refined into a family of natural polymer dispersants. The lignin backbone — substituted with sulfonate groups — gives the molecules their characteristic ability to disperse and deflocculate clay particles, which is exactly what’s needed in clay-based drilling fluids that have thickened from contamination. Five Rivers Materials supplies all three primary grades — sodium, calcium, and ferrochrome (FCLS) — for the full range of mud-system conditions.
Beyond oilfield, lignosulfonates are heavily used in industrial applications: as water-reducing admixtures in concrete (one of the most cost-effective plasticizers available), as pellet binders in animal feed manufacturing, as dust suppressants on roads, and as dispersants in ceramic and tile production. The product is renewable, biodegradable, and economically priced relative to synthetic alternatives.

Variants & Forms
Sodium Lignosulfonate
Most common form. General-purpose drilling-fluid dispersant and thinner. Cost-effective for fresh-water mud systems.
Calcium Lignosulfonate
Used in lime-treated and high-calcium mud systems. Improved thermal stability over sodium form.
Ferrochrome (FCLS)
Premium dispersant for high-temperature, high-pressure wells. Effective in muds at temperatures above 300°F.
